Jaydon started his journey with me on shaky ground. Years of negative tutoring experiences had left him teary, withdrawn, and convinced he wasn’t a “good writer.” He struggled with self-doubt, making even the simplest writing tasks feel overwhelming. But just a few months later, Jaydon had built academic writing confidence, transforming his essays, his mindset, and his academic success. This is the story of how personalized coaching, trust, and a love for writing turned his struggles into strengths.

A Shaky Start: Overcoming a Troubled Past with Tutoring

When Jaydon’s mother first reached out to me, she was emotional and worried. She explained that Jaydon had a traumatic experience with a previous tutor who had been harsh and insulting. This experience left Jaydon feeling defeated, wary of tutoring, and deeply insecure about his writing abilities.

Despite being a bright and motivated student, Jaydon was struggling to keep up with his AP coursework. He felt stuck, overwhelmed, and unsure of his future, with his confidence at an all-time low.

During our first meeting, Jaydon said very little, and his responses were barely audible. But then I noticed his guitar—a Christmas gift—and started talking about music.

Word by word, Jaydon began to open up, sharing his love for marching band, jazz band, and music in general. By the end of that session, he was speaking up—just a little—but it was a major first step.

Jaydon’s mom later shared that she hadn’t seen him smile in weeks, and she was hopeful for the first time in a long time.

Building Trust: A Safe Space for Writing and Growth

Jaydon’s challenges with writing were deeply tied to his lack of confidence and trust. To help him feel safe and supported, I designed our sessions to be collaborative and personalized.

Sometimes, when Jaydon seemed overwhelmed, he’d play music during our sessions. He would show me what he was learning on his guitar or piano, and we’d take a moment to enjoy his progress. These breaks weren’t just for fun—they allowed Jaydon to see how the skills he honed through music, like discipline and problem-solving, could transfer to writing and academics.

One of the most exciting connections we made was during a marching band competition. Jaydon was preparing to compete at the Foothill High School Marching Band Review, an event hosted by my alma mater. That year marked the 50th anniversary of the event, and I shared stories about my own time competing in the band. Jaydon lit up when I told him how proud I was to see him competing in the same event where I had performed years ago.

These moments helped us build a bond of trust and mutual respect, which became the foundation for Jaydon’s progress.

The Journey: Turning Challenges into Opportunities

Jaydon faced a variety of challenges in writing, from fluency to idea generation, but we tackled each one step by step. Here’s how we addressed his specific struggles:

  • Fluency and Overwhelm: Jaydon often felt stuck when starting assignments. We practiced brainstorming and free-writing techniques to help him get his ideas onto the page without fear of judgment.

  • Grammar and Style: Instead of using generic worksheets, we worked on grammar through his own writing, focusing on semi-colons, dashes, and comma usage. This made the process more personal and meaningful.

  • Idea Generation: We practiced strategies to generate and organize ideas, making assignments feel less daunting.

  • Confidence and Peer Reviews: Jaydon had a strong fear of peer feedback. I reframed peer reviews as a constructive, collaborative process, helping him see that writing isn’t about judgment—it’s about growth.

  • Daily Writing for Reflection: Jaydon started journaling about his everyday life, from family adventures to Halloween fun. This helped him see writing as a tool for reflection and self-expression, not just an academic task.

As his writing skills improved, Jaydon began to feel more confident in his abilities. He even started to enjoy reading again, diving into Neal Shusterman’s Scythe series and racing me to see who could read the most each week.

The Turning Point: Finding Passion and Purpose

Midway through our sessions, Jaydon began preparing for college applications. However, the pressure of standardized tests, AP exams, and college essays triggered intense anxiety.

We addressed this by using writing as a therapeutic outlet. Jaydon explored his fears through free writing, which helped him process his emotions and regain a sense of control.

At the same time, Jaydon discovered a new passion—working with his hands in shop class. He realized that technical education might align more closely with his interests than a traditional academic path. This realization lifted a huge weight off his shoulders and allowed him to approach college applications with excitement instead of dread.

Together, we crafted unique, inspiring essays that reflected his journey, his love for music, and his newfound interest in technical fields.

The Results: From Tears to Success

By the end of our time together, Jaydon had transformed in every way:

  • Improved Writing Skills: Jaydon’s writing improved by two grade levels, and he earned a 4 on his AP Lang exam.

  • Rediscovered Love for Reading: Jaydon became an avid reader, finishing the entire Scythe series and discussing his favorite moments with enthusiasm.

  • Confidence and Independence: Jaydon’s daily journaling helped him see writing as a tool for growth and reflection, boosting his self-esteem.

  • Academic and Personal Clarity: He scored well on standardized tests, crafted standout college essays, and began exploring technical education with confidence and excitement.

Jaydon’s mom shared:

Jaydon felt safe with you and learned so much about writing and himself. I knew after just one meeting that my son was in good hands.”

Most importantly, Jaydon no longer needed tutoring. Though saying goodbye was bittersweet, helping students gain independence and confidence is always my ultimate goal.

Final Thoughts: How Academic Writing Confidence Changes Everything

Jaydon’s story is a testament to the power of personalized learning. By meeting students where they are—emotionally and academically—we can help them build academic writing confidence, discover their strengths, and embrace their potential.

For Jaydon, success wasn’t just about better grades or test scores. It was about finding his voice, rediscovering his love for learning, and realizing that he could overcome challenges with the right support.

And for me, it was about sharing in his journey, whether through writing sessions, music breaks, or cheering him on at the Foothill High School Marching Band Review.

Every student’s journey is unique, but the goal is always the same: to help them grow into confident, independent learners who are ready for whatever comes next.

Turn Struggles Into Success

Jaydon’s journey shows what’s possible with the right guidance. If your student feels stuck in writing or overwhelmed by academic challenges, let’s change that.
